Study highlights vitamin D deficiency in Australia

Nearly one-third of Australian adults over the age of 25 have a vitamin D deficiency, according to new research.

The study from Melbourne University, involving over 11,000 people from across the country, has identified that 31% of male and female Australian adults showed vitamin D deficiencies.

It found that women were more commonly affected; showing 39% with insufficient levels compared to 23% of men and identified that older women were more prone to a deficiency linked with increasing obesity levels in the country, which lead to limited mobility, less outdoor physical activity and thus decreased sun exposure.

The two professors who led the study have called for national strategies to be taken, “before the problem worsens.”
