Diabetes and other metabolic disorders are providing fertile ground for new probiotic research, says a DuPont expert who has highlighted new findings on supplementation and a reduced risk of gestational diabetes.

Speaking our Probiota Asia summit in Singapore last month, Dr Anders Henriksson discussed the increasing volume of literature that suggests probiotics have benefits far beyond the traditional realm of gastrointestinal health.

In our video, we assess some of the findings around diabetes and look at the potential for further research into metabolic disorders.

One of the latest studies Dr Henriksson addressed was a New Zealand RCT which sought to discover if supplementation with the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 could reduce the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus.

It found that the prevalence of gestational diabetes was significantly lower in the HN001 group, and concluded that HN001 supplementation from 14 to 16 weeks' gestation may reduce the risk, particularly among older women.
