WATCH: 'Postbiotics' for oral care, weight management, and immune health in China

Taiwanese firm Chambio is eyeing the oral care, weight management, and immune health markets in China with heat-killed postbiotics, the metabolic by-product of probiotics.

The particular postbiotics strain Chambio uses is HK L-137 from Lactobacillus plantarum, a proprietary strain developed by Japanese firm House Wellness Foods. Based on a series of clinical trials, HK -137 is said to be able to improve oral health and boost immunity.

For instance, in subjects facing periodontal diseases, it was able to increase the depth of periodontal pockets that were greater than 4mm at baseline.

It was hypothesised that HK L-137 is able to enhance the immune system, hence, efficiently eliminating microorganisms from the periodontal pocket, in turn alleviating chronic periodontitis.

With the unique functions, Chambio is thus customising HK L-137 for use in China market and is partnering with Guangzhou firm Suzhou 2 Dragon for product distribution within China.

In an exclusive video interview with NutraIngredients-Asia, Yi-Heng Chiu, R&D director at Chambio, said that one of the key applications, was to use HK L-137 in oral care products.

This is because current oral care products mainly come in the form of disinfectants and thus there was market opportunity for products that come in the form of food.

“This is a differentiation from other products which are already available in the market,” Chiu said.

There are also plans to use HK L-137 for immunity-boosting and weight management supplements.
