Japan’s Ezaki Glico’s liquid infant formula sales was three times higher than initial forecasts, the company told us.

Japan lifted a ban on the production and sale of liquid infant formula products last August, and Ezaki Glico launched its products in March this year.

The products are currently sold at drug stores, baby products stores, and e-commerce stores in the country. In Hokkaido, Ezaki Glico is also expanding its sales by selling their products in vending machines for emergency and convenience purposes.

The product does not require hot water, unlike powdered formula, and does not contain preservatives.

Shipments by Ezako Glico have reached three times than expected, showing strong demand from families because liquid formula can be stored at room temperature and is RTD.

The spokesperson said: “The expiration date of the formula is 6 months. We can store it safe at room temperature without preservatives as it is made with aseptic packaging method after sterilisation treatment.”

The liquid infant formula is available in a 125mL container at the price of ¥200 excluding tax.

The full ingredients in the liquid infant formula are: Modified edible fats and oils (Fractionated lard, Oleo oil, Soybean oil, Coconut oil, Palm olein), Whey powder, Lactose, Skim milk powder, Concentrated protein whey powder, Galacto-oligosaccharide syrup, Perilla oil/Vitamin C, Lecithin, Potassium carbonate, Potassium chloride, Calcium hydroxide, Vitamin E, Inositol, Taurine, 5'-cytidylic acid, Zinc sulfate, Sodium uridylate, Iron sulfate, Nicotinic acid, 5'-adenylic acid, Calcium pantothenate, Copper sulfate, Vitamin A, Sodium inosinate, Sodium guanylate, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B6, Carotene, Folic acid, Biotin, Vitamin D, and Vitamin B12, (some parts contain milk constituents/soybeans).

Meiji is the other company authorised to sell liquid infant formula in Japan.
