The man in question is Professor Jeya Henry, who is currently spearheading Singapore’s Clinical Nutrition Research Centre, with a clear focus on assessing food and nutrition solutions to tackle some of Asia’s biggest health concerns, such as obesity and diabetes.
Before that, he was a leading light at the UK’s first-of-its-kind Functional Food Centre at Oxford Brooke’s University, and played a major role at the Food Standard’s Agency – the first independent government organisation tasked with protecting public health through food science and safety, via a model that has gone on to be replicated in many other countries.
In this podcast, we chart Prof Henry’s first interests in food science and nutrition as a child in Sri Lanka, to his time at the London School of Hygiene and Tropic Medicine under the guidance of the inspirational Professor John Waterlow, and on to Oxford and then to Singapore.
He discusses the importance of linking science to business as well as health outcomes, the work he is most proud of and explains why food and nutrition researchers are “God’s chosen people”.
