Seize the spray: Why oral spray vitamins are gaining traction across APAC – WATCH

Oral spray vitamins and mineral supplements are gaining interest across Asia-Pacific markets beyond the novelty factor, due to the ease of convenience and efficacy that they can provide, according to two pioneering firms in the category.

Within Asia-Pacific, US-based SpectraSpray is currently working with Singapore distributor Rainbow Care for its business in the region, while the UK’s BetterYou is available in South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore as well.

“Every APAC market, I think, would be ripe for the innovation and the credibility that comes from oral spray delivery,” said Andy Thomas, founder and CEO of BetterYou.

SpectraSpray is also planning for its entry into the travel retail market, as well as the Middle East, said Janet Ryan, founder of SpectraSpray Global.

“The most important reason for why we developed oral spray supplements is for the absorption...We are also able to create clean, natural formulas without binders and fillers because there are no capsules and tablets that you need those binders and fillers for [when you make oral spray supplements].

“The other reason is for convenience. People have a busy lifestyle, there is no need for water and food when using oral sprays,” Ryan said, adding that oral spray supplements also provided an alternative for elderly suffering from dysphagia and for young children who could not swallow tablets or capsules.

On the other hand, having started his oral spray supplement business since 2008, Thomas recalled how the firm had come a long way in honing the techniques for making oral spray vitamins and minerals.

This include identifying the right form, the combination, the optimum volume of active ingredients, and the size of the spray's holding chamber.

“Vitamin C, for example, is something that we have spent a long time looking at for the delivery volumes, and we have managed to get dosage of up to 100 to 130ml, which is optimal for vitamin C.

“But when I first started looking at vitamin C as an oral spray delivery, I couldn’t get a volume of more than 20 or 30ml, which meant that it wasn’t a viable product. But now, we can get a lot of actives primarily because of our ability to formulate the products well but also in the choice of the spray’s holding chamber and the aperture,” Thomas said.
