The founder of Australia-based JSHealth Vitamins, which is expanding across Asia, says beauty-from-within success has to start by targeting the gut, and predicts that microbiome-focused innovations will continue to grow in popularity.

JSHealth was founded by nutritionist and author Jessica Sepel.

Speaking at our Growth Asia Summit in Singapore, she said: “From my time as a nutritionist, I can confirm without a doubt that beauty starts from within and this is the way of the future."

“Supplementation in simple terms is really just a way to take therapeutic doses of powerful nutrients. When it comes to tackling our beauty needs, we must address them in a holistic way and come to understand the intrinsic link between our internal health and beauty to achieve long lasting results.”

The science behind ingestible beauty

According to Sepel, treatments will be ineffective if they only focus on relieving the symptoms without addressing the root causes. To unlock beauty from within, she advocates targeting gut health with appropriate doses of the right nutrients.

The effectiveness of ingestible beauty products lies in their ability to deliver therapeutic doses of powerful nutrients and minerals. Sepel emphasises the importance of high-strength therapeutic doses, explaining, “That’s how you feel the effects of the product.”

This approach not only targets symptoms but also addresses underlying health issues that manifest as skin and hair problems, which can be linked to gut health.

“Our gut microbiome is linked to many other facets of our well-being. The gut microbiome, which houses 70-80% of our immune system, plays a crucial role in regulating mood and skin health. Disruptions in the gut microbiome can lead to inflammatory responses, causing skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema.

“As a nutritionist often I see firsthand how gut disorders and skin issues often go hand in hand. Also, recent studies in 2018 confirmed a link between gut health and acne revealing that individuals of acne tend to have less diversity of bacterial compared to those without acne. This underscores the interconnectedness of the gut and skin through various factors including diet, bacteria, and immune system pathways,” said Sepel.

She observed that conditions such as acne, psoriasis, dermatitis, and eczema may result from a disruption in the microbiome, leading to an immune-modulated inflammatory response, which she often saw from her decade-long experience over the past decade, seeing numerous clients with breakouts.

Solutions for optimising skin and hair health

Its Skin + Digestion formula combines nutrients that benefit skin and gut health. Zinc, a key ingredient, supports both skin health and the gastrointestinal system, while turmeric, based on traditional Western herbal medicine, relieves digestive discomfort.

The active ingredients in each dose or 1 capsule of the Skin + Digestion formula includes 20 mg riboflavin (Vitamin B2), 15mg Zinc, and 75 mg Curcuma longa (Turmeric) extracted dry concentrate from 750g of dry rhizome.

Similarly, the Hair + Energy formula addresses hair growth and energy levels. Studies have shown that iodine maintains and supports energy levels and body metabolism. It also aids thyroid gland function and regulates thyroid hormones. Furthermore, thyroid hormones play an essential role in the development and maintenance of hair follicles. Research also shows that gut dysbiosis is often found in those with thyroid disease. Therefore, poor gut health may impair thyroid function, which could affect hair health.

“Hair growth has often been addressed through topical scalp treatments or medical interventions. However, we’ve seen firsthand the power of ingestible supplements in supporting hair growth and strength. This formula includes zinc, another mineral proven to restore hair health and promote growth, and Iodine from a special blend of kelp by JSHealth, which is crucial for maintaining hair health and promoting growth,” said Sepel.

Each dose or 1 capsule in the Hair + Energy formula includes 100 micrograms of iodine and 10mg Zinc.

Online reviews of JSHealth’s products have indicated an improvement in skin and hair health. Users of the Skin + Digestion formula observed clear skin and better gut health after taking the supplements for a year, while those who used the Hair + Energy formula reported an increase in hair strength and growth within a month.

“As we embrace the future of beauty, let's remember that true transformation starts from within. By nourishing our bodies with the right nutrients and minerals, we unlock our natural radiance and vitality. The way forward asks us to redefine beauty by focusing on holistic health and wellness,” concluded Sepel.
